Spinal cord injuries range from bruises to paralysis
One of the most severe injuries that a person can suffer is a spinal cord injury. Although medical science has advanced in its treatment, dramatic breakthroughs in improved patient function and diminished disability have not occurred.
One type of injury is a spinal cord bruise. With this the victim may only have a short-term loss of sensation or function. In some cases, the injured person might, over time, regain full function. More severe spinal cord bruises can leave permanent deficits.

A more severe injury is a spinal cord injury that leaves a person with paraplegia -- or paralysis in the legs. That can occur with severe trauma to the lower back or lumbar spine.
Quadriplegia is paralysis or loss of use in the arms and legs. This can occur in a severe injury to the neck, cervical spine, the thoracic spine or mid back.
Motor vehicle collisions, truck collisions, and motorcycle collisions are some of the most common causes of these catastrophic injuries.
